[Steve does not want the Byers of all people to take pity on him. He also has this unsettling ball of guilt forming within his stomach that Mrs. Byers and Jonathan both were willing to offer him the get out of jail card. It only made him feel that much worse due to the shitty things he had spat out in anger and here they were offering him kindness.
That was punishment enough and it made him feel like the worst human in all of Hawkins.
Joyce leaves no room for protesting as she marches both boys out of the police station and Steve figures it wouldn't do much to argue with the woman. Jonathan confirms this once the two are by themselves and Steve finds himself bouncing on his heels anxiously. ]
