Steve let out a breath he didn't even notice he was holding when Eddie defended him. It would have been difficult to practice without at least someone putting their trust in him. He would just have to prove to everyone else that he had what it takes. After all, he wasn't trying to replace Gareth; he was just pitching in until their ordinary drummer recovered.
"Dio, got it," Steve repeated, his heart beating a little faster as he closed his eyes to try and recall which one that was. Gareth had him running through a lot, and he liked to think he could differentiate between them all, but it was so different running them through with Gareth than playing with everyone else.
Once Craig set him up with a song list, he studied those names and imagined himself back in Gareth's garage with the younger drummer drilling him, calling out song titles only to have Steve jump right in. Suddenly, he was thankful for the time spent running through each song. While Steve didn't delude himself into believing he would get it perfect on the first try, he at least was confident he would be able to know which track came when.
"Whenever you're ready," Steve piped up, tilting his head from one side to the other to crack his neck and psych himself up. It was now or never.
